Catch That Trout - South Island

image003_1_1.jpgRon's second book,
Catch That Trout - South Island
,
concentrates on tackle and techniques needed to fish in the South Island of New Zealand. It details 16 of the best troutfishing waters in what many troutfishing writers regard as the best flyfishing in the world.

Every angler has heard of those huge brown trout cruising in crystal-clear waters of the pristine back country of scenic New Zealand - want to try your hand at some of them? But those fish do not get to 10 lbs by being easy to catch.

There are special techniques the crafty Kiwis have developed to catch these monsters and if you don't know them, you will not go home with that trophy trout photo. These fish are few and far between. If you put one down (very easily done) you may have 2 kilometres walk before you find the next one.

I met an older angler on the Big Hole River during my 2003. He had just watched me land a 5 lb brown - a good fish from that stretch of the river. We had a good yarn once he discerned I was a Kiwi. He said he had been to New Zealand and fished those magic waters but he had found the fishing too tough. Without the benefit of some inside information, he had just spooked fish after fish. And he was a bit old to cover 10 km up a rugged river to fish to just 5 big trout.

But if you buy this book, you will find it easier to catch those monsters. And you won't need to shell out US$500 a day for a guide. Just one tenth of that cost will see you know exactly where and precisely how to catch a trophy trout.

Ron,
A quick e-mail to thank you for sharing the wealth of knowledge with the rest of us. I live in a small town in country Victoria - and come over to NZ two or three times a year for work. I always combine my November trip with a ten day backcountry flyfishing trip. I took your advice an headed into the upper Waiau last year - caught a beautiful 12 lb brown on the dry. A great fish. After I landed it - photographed and released this wild beauty - I raised an invisible glass to you Ron.

So thanks again - I love reading (and re-reading) your book.
Warmest regards,
John Will
