Moving House Checklist

This checklist will help you to prepare a Moving Plan.

Three months before your move:
• select several removal firms, trucking companies, or rental truck agencies and obtain quotes
• research a new doctor, lawyer, accountant, bank and other essential service providers in your new town/city

Two months before:
• contact the preferred company and advise likely dates for pick up and delivery
• plan a garage sale and set a date. Advertise it and prepare placards
• contact your insurance company and check insurance coverage
• start a ‘Move File’ containing all documents associated with the move
• select your preferred new doctor/lawyer/accountant/bank and contact them
• if you have pets, schedule a vaccination/check up and collect the pet’s records

One month before:
• ask your doctor/lawyer/accountant to pass on your files to your new providers of these services
• contact electric and gas suppliers and schedule a cut off date
• contact other suppliers like lawn mowing company, garden waste disposal and schedule a final supply date
• contact your new utility suppliers and schedule date for connection

One week before:
• cancel newspapers
• clean out the refrigerator
• transfer or close your bank accounts
• redirect mail
• cancel phone service
• obtain phone numbers for emergency services in your new town

Moving Day:
• sort out a ‘Do Not Move’ area for items you want to take with you
• supervise the moving company or helpers
• clean the whole house including carpets
• arrange animal transport
• check entire house making sure nothing has been left
• lock all doors and windows
• carry any valuables with you
