Waitawheta River

Another Trophy Trout River

Waitawheta River

Description & Directions

The first encounter with this charming river is usually from the historic Goldmine Walkway, which starts from the first bridge over the Ohinemuri River at the beginning of the Karangahake Gorge. A few hundred metres along the track, the Waitawheta River flows into the Ohinemuri just opposite the site of an old Stamping Battery. From the junction, access up the Waitawheta Gorge is easy as the track follows the water pipeline for the township of Paeroa. The water in this section consists mainly of large deep pools. It is necessary to clamber down from the track above and fish a pool or two before you are forced to regain the track. There is a lot of fishing water but unless the trout are rising, a rather heavy style of fishing is required, as you have to get down to the deep-lying fish.
