Waipapa River

Description & Directions

The scenic Waipapa River rises in the Northeast corner of the beautiful Puketi Forest in central Northland. The river wends its way through the 8,061-hectare forest and only for the last few kilometres does it venture outside of the Forest Park. The shade provided by the mature kauri forest ensures the river is cool, making it one of the few rivers in Northland to be able to sustain a trout population. The upper reaches are accessible by way of the Waipapa River Track that follows the river for most of its length.
