The Lakes Resort PauanuiThe Lakes Resort Golf Course, PauanuiLakes Resort, Pauanui has been the dream of Gary and Angie MacDougall since they purchased this hidden valley back in 1997. At first Gary and Angie had intentions of occupying the land purely for lifestyle purposes but soon realised the potential of the property would be best suited to that of a high quality golf resort.A significant challenge was to retain the pristine native wetlands with its abundance of native flora and fauna while creating a world class golfing facility. To do this they engaged the services of Canadian golf course designers, Sid Puddicombe Associates to create this very special course. Their task was to create a golf course of the highest world standard, ensuring all of the natural beauty of the area was retained, but at the same time allowing the course to be a challenge to both low handicap and casual golfers alike. ![]() Signature Hole 14th Hole A long par 4 that plays over the creek with fairway bunkers and strategically located native trees testing the tee shots. The best tee shot is one that carries the cabbage trees on the left and lands your ball safely in the middle of the fairway. Any shot to the right will find the fairway bunkers, or worse, the bush. The green is located in a clearing surrounded by dense native vegetation, a very peaceful setting. In fact, it is the peace and quiet of this golf course that is one of its most noticeable features, Absolutely no road noise produces a real tranquil experience. ![]() 4th Hole : Matata (Fernbird) This is perhaps the most attractive hole on the front 9. It is the first of many holes entering the natural wetland area. From the tee, the ideal shot to aim as close to the fairway bunker on the right as possible to ensure a good angle for the approach shot. The setting of this green is second to none, framed by Duck Creek with native trees in the background. Two large greenside bunkers help to contain stray balls from entering the creek on the left. ![]() ![]() There is plenty of water around the course so make sure you take a few spare balls – eight of us lost 33 balls between us!
