Shanghai

Mao & me

We stopped off in Shanghai on the way to Spain. I had been to Shanghai on business previously but had never had the chance to visit the Bund area. This is a long street bordering the river. It has a large number of beautiful buildings built in the early 1900's when the French had a concession from China. So the buildings have a French Colonial look that is unique in Asia. We had dinner at a wonderful restaurant called 'M On The Bund' and were given a table that looked down the whole of the Bund from four stories up. I cannot recall a more beautiful setting for a dinner. We watched the illuminated tourist boats going up and down the river as well as the never-ending stream of cars driving along the Bund. Unfortunately, we did not take our camera.

The restaurant also gives a great view of the Pudong commercial area. One of the 'things to do' in Shanghai is to watch the lights being turned out in Pudong. All the buildings are lit up and their lights are all turned off at 11 pm. Quite a sight!

The contrast between the wealth of the Bund and the poorer areas of Shanghai was quite dramatic.

Modern office block towers over Shanghai slums

One of the 'must see' features of Shanghai is the Planning Museum. This has a huge scaled model of Shanghai will look like in 50 years time. It was amazing. Made you wonder if Auckland has a model of the city for even 5 years in the future - I suspect not or we would not have had the rash of pokey apartment buildings.
